How does it work?

Solar savings come from two sources:

  • Self-consumption: solar electricity you use directly — saves the import price.
  • Grid export: surplus electricity sold to the grid — earns export compensation.

Typical household self-consumption ratio is 25–40% without a battery, rising to 60–80% with battery storage.

Get your annual generation figure from your inverter portal (SolarEdge, Fronius, SMA) or estimate from PVGIS (free EU solar estimation tool at ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/pvgis).

All prices shown are examples. Enter your actual import and export rates from your energy contract.

Example

Example: 4 kWp system, 3500 kWh/year generation, 35% self-consumption.

Self-used: 3500 × 0.35 = 1225 kWh

Exported: 3500 × 0.65 = 2275 kWh

Import savings: 1225 × 0.18 = €220.50 (example)

Export earnings: 2275 × 0.08 = €182 (example)

Total: €402.50/year | System cost €5000: payback ≈ 12.4 years
